The Clark Street Bridge Project

Commissioned by the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago 2007.

“The actual event was miraculous. There were a couple hundred people on the bridge. It was unseasonably hot – the Marathon was the following day, at which there were heat-related fatalities. Everybody was so patient and generous. It could have been something different and unfortunate; the mallets had been distributed to ‘the masses’ BEFORE rather than AFTER the performance. I was concerned that few would have patience for so much music [almost a half hour] on a hot day, let alone when many people were attending for the opportunity to smack the bridge with percussion instruments (something I obviously condone wholeheartedly). Instead, Hugh [Musick] got everyone’s attention. Everything stopped and we performed the entire piece to a rapt and friendly audience. Afterward, an aural barrage of wood and plastic and rubber and metal on heavy metal dominated that section of downtown Chicago for another half hour or so. The attendees had some energy to release. Everybody got to have the relationship with the Clark Street Bridge that we’d hoped: instrumentalist to great big civic instrument.” Eric Roth 2010
